HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol)
this allows the exchange of information on the world wide web. it can be used to transfer data back anf forth on the web between webpages. it used to access the majority of websites and had to be used in the past but now it is always included in modern web browsers because majority of websites use it.

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
this is basicaly used to transfer email messages from one server to the other and vice versa. a server using pop or imap are able to retireve messages.

RTP (Real-Time Transport Protocol)
this is used for real time data which is mostly used for webchats, live video streaming, radio streaming. its basicaly anything that isnt saved and needs constant transfer of data with no end.

DNS (Domain Name System)
this to me seems like a guide for donaim or host names to their associated ip adress. i would thing of it somewhat as a navigator.it is able to translate what you are looking for into an ip so the computer can better undertsand it.

TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)
is sort of a way to correct any problems within the network. it will check packets for errors and make corrections as needed.

UDP (User Datagram Protocol)
different from tcp in a way that it doesnt divide or check for errors within packets. the up side to this is it allows for a faster transmission of packets.

IP (Internet Protocol)
there are different classes of this, it is like a house adress in the netwrok. used for location and a vast amount of things across the network. every computer, tablet, wireless printer has their own ip adress as long as its connecting to the internet.

ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol)
able to report errors for tcp/ip messages. an extension to internet protocol.

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
using standard copper lines it gives the ability to home and business users acess to the internet at great speeds especially compared to dial up. must be within distance of your phone company to work.

SONET(Synchronous Optical Network)
the physical layer of the network and can connect fiber optics. able to carry large amounts of data at a great distance.

802.11 (Wireless LAN (WLAN))
used for wireless netowrks based of ethernet connections to routers. there are different types which result in different speeds or amount of data being broadcasted.

used till today all over is a fast and reliable way to transfer data to computers from the network and viceversa. many companies are utilizing this for quick and easy installation of internet acess.
