Acronym assignment

http: Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
-governs the way web browser servers communicate
-it sends requests and return responses
-used to request website for the user

SMTP: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
-used to send emails/messages between servers.
-breaks up emails into smaller segments with the subject, message itself and receiver that the receiving server understands and rebuilds .

RTP: Real-time Transfer Protocol
-specifies the way programs transfer multimedia data
-used for video conference calls
-could monitor delivery of multimedia
-has a payload identifier to detect what kind of media is being sent

DNS: Domain Name System/Server
-keeps tracks of network settings and resources making using the networks simpler for the user.
-the DNS stores ip addresses that are commonly used and the everything else needed to make communication between servers seamless

 TCP: Transmission Control Protocol
-keeps track of packets as they are routed to their destination
-reassembles the packets to be one file

UDP: User Datagram Protocol
-sends datagrams directly to the address without having any prior communication, no connection
-no way of checking if data was transmitted properly
-not very effective for communication

IP: Internet Protocol
-the main protocol used for communicating within the internet
-used for sending packets across the platform.
-used to switch data packets from the host in 802.11 to Ethernet that communicates with the server


ICMP: Internet Control Message Protocol
-error reporting and diagnosing utility
-used to report errors
-checks for errors and miscommunication

DSL: Digital Subscriber Line
-the device used to connect the telephone line to a computer or router.
-provides internet to the subscriber from the provider.
-converts fiber signals to the home internet

SONET: Synchronous Optical Network
-one fiber handles data transfer
-other fibers are on standby in case of failure to pick up data transfer
-has room for latency with many back up plans


802.111:
-also known as wifi
-governs the wireless area network
-sends data through wireless signals


ETHERNET:
-the medium used to connect devices through cables
-wires from the hosts to the routers or modem
